8 Energy Recovery Facilities, VIRIDOR, United Kingdom

VIRIDOR currently operates 8 ERFs throughout the UK, producing 2,315 GWh of electricity per year – enough to power the equivalent of 635,000 households. These facilities make a significant contribution to the UK waste reduction plan and the reduction of waste impact on the climate.

The unique feature of VIRIDOR’s ERFs is that they are all modern and incorporate the latest technologies for pollutant treatment and energy recovery.

ENNOVIA‘s Missions

VIRIDOR’s clients demand high performance, which means that any loss of availability during production is unacceptable. To meet this challenge, VIRIDOR decided to work with ENNOVIA due to its many years of experience in technical data management, maintenance engineering, documentation management systems, and recognized expertise in the energy production sector.

The objective is to deploy a comprehensive Electronic Document Management System (EDMS) solution for all ERFs.

At the forefront of the solution implemented by ENNOVIA is the EDMS module of QUICKBRAIN, developed by its subsidiary, CRAZYLOG. This module has already been used in over 40 ERFs in Europe, demonstrating its effectiveness, reliability, and simplicity. These are characteristics highly appreciated by on-site technicians.

The project started in 2018 with three ERFs, and an additional 5 were integrated in 2021, with over 450 users connected to the QUICKBRAIN platform.

In 2022, all instances were migrated to Quickbrain V2 to provide an improved user experience.

A challenging endeavor for our teams and an agile response to meet current environmental needs.

Maintenance Engineering Phase with Integration into QUICKBRAIN

ENNOVIA has integrated all the documentation and equipment technical hierarchy of the 8 ERFs into QUICKBRAIN:

  1. Trident Park (Cardiff)
  2. Ardley (Oxfordshire)
  3. Beddington (South London)
  4. Avonmouth
  5. Runcorn (Manchester)
  6. Peterborough
  7. Dunbarr
  8. Glasgow (GRREC)

The work involved associating relevant technical documents (datasheets, plans, maintenance manuals, etc.) with each equipment in the plant through functional codes.

We have also transformed all P&IDs (Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams) into clickable interactive diagrams (Smart-Drawings). Once this work is completed, users can directly access pump documentation through the technical hierarchy, search engine, QR code reading, or smart-drawing.

For information, the volume processed for one facility is 6,000 documents and 10,000 equipment tags, with up to 60,000 documents for the Runcorn ERF!

IT Outsourcing Services and Cybersecurity Management

This solution is hosted in ENNOVIA’s virtualized infrastructure on IBM CLOUD LONDON. The servers are supervised and maintained by ENNOVIA’s IT team. High availability is ensured by IBM Cloud hosting, and access security is managed by a dedicated firewall in the IBM cloud architecture, administered by ENNOVIA.

ENNOVIA has installed Linux servers, middleware, and web applications on the provisioned virtual server on the IBM CLOUD platform. The architecture includes one virtual server per instance and its dedicated services, consisting of a Quickbrain Linux server containing the Quickbrain web application and its MySQL database.

A local backup solution (script, application-based solution, etc.) has been installed by us on the aforementioned servers. These servers are part of ENNOVIA’s general external backup on the IBM cloud.

Access to the servers is done via IPSEC VPN. A firewall manages access permissions to this infrastructure. A public external HTTPS access is provided for client access to the Quickbrain application.

Restricted SFTP access is available for periodic downloading of static versions of Quickbrain (a streamlined version for operators). The client synchronizes the static version of Quickbrain with their Sharepoint infrastructure and provides access to 450 users through the internal network.

Access is authorized through the application access system. Several “anti-attack” devices are deployed on the servers. Application authentication is managed by Viridor’s Azure AD (Oauth 2.0), ensuring that no passwords are stored on our servers.

In conclusion, the deployment project of the EDMS solution by ENNOVIA for VIRIDOR’s ERFs has been a success. Through ENNOVIA’s expertise and the utilization of QUICKBRAIN, maintenance technicians have easy access to information, resulting in improved efficiency.

The integration of documentation and equipment was meticulously executed, and the solution is securely hosted on IBM CLOUD LONDON, guaranteeing success in all aspects.

This project has enabled VIRIDOR to enhance its performance and contribute to the reduction of climate impact. The collaboration between VIRIDOR and ENNOVIA has been fruitful, meeting current environmental needs in a comprehensive approach to excellence.
